Sumo Digital confirmed Friday that Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed will not support voice chat on the Wii U.

In response to a question on the Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed forums, one of the Sumo developers posted, "We don't support voice chat on WiiU [sic] for those reasons, one of the side effects of being a launch title basically. Does support it on PS3 and 360 though!"

"Those reasons" was a list of the limitations of the Wii U's voice chat setup posted by GoNintendo. As we covered Saturday, here is how voice chat works on the Wii U.

The GamePad mic will not work for in-game voice chat during multiplayer.

There is no universal support for in-game voice chat.

Developers have to add voice chat support on a game-by game basis.

The Wii U does not come with a headset.

Third-party headsets from Turtle Beach and Mad Catz are supported.

Wired headset can only be plugged into the GamePad. The Wii U Pro controller does not have a jack.

Third-party peripheral makers can create headsets that plug into the USB port of the Wii U (wirelessly popsolrepublic.com or wired) but developers have to specifically program game and chat audio through the USB.

While Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed does not support voice chat, it is confirmed for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin's Creed III and Mass Effect 3.

Update: Sumo provided the following additional context to the lack of voice chat support in Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed in a post at NeoGAF.

Bear in mind Voice chat is only supported by third party peripherals and then only on the GamePad. Given we felt only a select few players would therefore go buy said peripheral and it meant only one player being able to chat, we opted to spend the time and effort on features more players would enjoy.

We've hardly rushed it sol republic out, we've attempted to support as many WiiU specifics as we can via the 5 player splitscreen both off and online, WiiU specific game modes, Mii's with a unique vehicle and more.

You make these calls with a launch title as you don't know what kind of uptake a given feature has. Besides, lack of voice chat never hurt Mario Kart Wii eh?
